Pre Season - Tigers vs South African Airlines

Tigers Top The Tourists
4th October 2007
by Chris Mills

PAPHOS TIGERS gave themselves an early boost to their forthcoming league campaign when they beat a South African Airways touring team under floodlights at the Kiniras Sports Centre, Geriskipou, 23-0, on the 2nd October (Tuesday).

After a fairly drab first-half in which there was plenty of scrumming, lineouts and defensive errors, the Tigers came in at half-time 6-0 up thanks to two penalties from newcomer Marcos Holden.

The second-half saw some lively play with Tigers gradually getting on top. In the 48th minute, Holden converted a superb 'Wilko'-style penalty from by the touchline to increase the score to 9-0.

Tigers kept up the attack and from a flowing move the ball came out to Nick Nabney, who went over near the corner after 56 minutes. Again Holden converted superbly for a 16-0 scoreline.

Tigers domination continued for the remainder of the match and after a good kick ahead, George Agathocleous dived over in the corner for a 70th minute try. This time Tony Thoma showed his kicking ability to convert and make the final score, 23-0.

So with two converted tries and three penalties Tigers are shaping up to produce the type of play that won them the League in 2006.

The match was well supported by the loyal home fans and we also welcomed many touring fans as well. The post-match entertainment was held at the Keg and Barrel in Kato Paphos.

The Paphos Tigers would like to thank Rona of Artio Brasserie for organising the venue etc, and the fans for their continued support.
