Paphos Tigers Win the League Paphos Tigers are pleased to announce that we have won the League for 2009/10. Chairman of the Joint Services League, Andy Buckle confirmed the result yesterday. The Tigers official results are:- Played 10 Won 6 Drawn 1 Points For 253 Points Against 125 League Points 23 Position 1ST Club Coach Graham Boyle said "After a very hard fought season, when we managed to overcome many highs and lows, we are absolutely delighted to have won the League. We incurred many injuries to key players throughout the season but our young Tigers stepped up to the plate and proved themselves to be worthy contenders for 1st team places. We are looking forward to next season when we shall attempt to achieve our ultimate goal of winning both the League and Cup. We would all like to thank all of our loyal supporters, a very hardworking and busy Committee, and of course a special thank you to our sponsors and to our friends in the media for all of their help and support. Thank you one and all." Nick Bilton, Coach Co Ordinator said:- "It is always great to finish a season with silverware, but we have still not proven our true capabilities until we have secured both Cups from the League and the Joint Service Cup in our cabinet. Congratulations and well done to the lads in achieving this third league win in only our 7th season." Captain Matt Lowe said:- "This is a very proud moment for me in my first year as Captain, and winning the League with such a fantastic squad is a brilliant achievement. Posted on: 11/05/2010 13:07.00 by Paphos TigersPaphos Tigers Veterans & Tigers 1st XV v Touring Sides Tottonians – SouthamptonThis touring party of 51 guys arrived on Friday afternoon, and quickly established themselves in the local hostelries, making friends, imbibing local drinks and enjoying a mezee, and then onto the famous Bar street for the night. Just a normal start to a tour really !!!. Saturday arrives and the first match to kick off is the Veterans encounter. A good size crowd of around 150 enjoying their beers and burgers, have assembled and they get to watch a great match. These "over 35's" put on quite a spectacular show, making the ball do most of the work and their passing and handling at times sublime The Tigers Vets eventually run out winners by 50 points to 5, scoring 7 tries, 6 converted and one penalty, and rightly leave the field proud of their achievement. The 1st XV's then take the field and quickly the Tigers are shaken, not once but twice as Tottonians large well drilled pack make their presence felt and two early tries in the opening 10 minutes, both converted, and only answered by a penalty, takes the visitors into a 14 points to 3 lead. Another penalty to the Tigers narrows the gap a little more 4 minutes later, and it's only on half time that the Tigers score their first try, with front row forward Tony Thoma crashing over. Conversion is missed so the half time score is now Tottonians 14 ,Tigers 11. The second half starts with a bang and Tottonians narrowly miss a penalty, but the Tigers answer with guest player Marco Miladenvic breaking through their defence and chipping across for young Tiger winger Danny Humphreys to chase ahead and score near the post. This is the first time the Tigers are in front at 18-14, but Tottonians are not giving up and attack again putting extreme pressure on the Tigers who first try to run the ball out from under their posts, and then the desperate clearance kick hits their own posts to fall into Tottonians hands and a well deserved try easily converted, now giving the visitors the lead 21 – 18. Two minutes later Tigers level the scores with a penalty, and then over the next 30 minutes, with both sides enjoying end to end rugby, the Tigers get two more penalties tying up the final score as Tigers 27 Tottonians 21. This was a big game and full marks to both teams in putting on a great match. Thank you Tottonians for coming to Paphos, we thoroughly enjoyed your friendship and rugby skills. Safe journey home. This was Paphos Tigers last league match of the season, and having won 6 and lost 3 they wanted to go out with a win to help keep them top of the table and possible league champions. Dhekelia Lions however had other plans as they have been pushing the Tigers very hard all season and beat a depleted Tigers side in Jan by 29 points to 7 and had no intention of rolling over without a fight. Even the heavens decided to add to the fun, having deposited 4 hours of rain prior to the match , it relented just in time for the kick off so the big match started. First blood went to the Lions when Tiger Ginge "The Spring's" knee didn't recoil to well and he had to leave the game early, and 2 early penalties to the Lions were missed, and a quick tap penalty taken by the Tigers was knocked on with the line begging. The tension was mounting and silly penalties were given away by both teams but no score was forthcoming. Even when a line out comfortably won by "AJ" Pugh of the Tigers was turned into a rolling maul and driven over the line, the Lions defended superbly and managed to prevent them from touching down, much to the consternation of the crowd. The Lions missed with a drop goal attempt leaving the score nil all at half time.. So the second half kicks off and the Lions big No8 is playing really well, a driving force in all rucks and killing a lot of good ball and frustrating the Tiger attacks, but a silly punch thrown by the Lions results in a yellow card and 10 minute sin bin for their player. The Tigers are determined to take advantage of this situation and a couple of minutes later, after some excellent inter play between forwards and backs Tiger Captain Matt Lowe scored under the posts, and this try converted by Jack Bilton took them into a 7 points to nil lead. The Tigers narrowly miss a penalty shortly afterwards but good pressure on the Lions 5 metre line gives up a scrum easily won by the Tigers but the ball is too slow coming out along the line and the opportunity to score is missed. This match is end to end and pressure is now on the Paphos Tigers as a big scrum near their try line is won and picked up by the Lions and their big No8 is held up, twice, and a penalty to Tigers relieves the pressure. Dhekelia Lions are determined to get back into this game and ratchet up the pressure even more in the dying minutes of the match and some great defence by the Tigers keeps them out until the last minute when the Tigers concentration briefly lapsed and Dhekelia Lions broke from a line out to score under the posts, which is duly converted, followed by the referee blowing for full time. Final score Paphos Tigers 7 Dhekelia Lions 7. Paphos Tigers are still top of the league but other sides have some games in hand (but only a week to play them) so we shall have to wait to see if the Tigers have retained the League Title which they won last year. Posted on: 27/04/2010 13:08.00 by Paphos TigersAplogies for the delay. Find below three match reports.Paphos Tiger Vets v Old Brentwood Vets Paphos Tigers 1st XV v Old Brentwood 1st XV Sat 24th April 2010. Paphos Tigers Vets were supported by Episkopi Vets and a great mixed team took the field to face their touring opposites. It was only 2 minutes before the first score came with the Tigers starting off some great moves which must have passed through 12 pairs of hands before being touched down in the corner. This was the first of 9 tries scored, by the Tiger Vets, and at half time 38 points had been realized. The second half continued in the same vein and the final score was Tiger Vets 64 Brentwood Vets nil. Although the score shows a large margin the match was played in the true spirit of the game and respect must be given to the tourists in not giving up, and the large crowd of over 200 enjoyed this high scoring spectacle. __________________________________________________ The Tigers 1st XV took the field immediately afterwards and it was also only a couple of minutes before they scored their first try. This was not to be such a one sided affair as the first match, but the Tigers steadily increased their lead to 26 points to nil at halftime. The second half saw the Tigers start as they finished the first with a quick try and some very unselfish passes were made amongst them for 3 more tries in this half, but full marks to Brentwood as they were determined to score and justly got a great try from a good pressurised scrum in the corner finished off under the Tigers posts, which was duly converted. With about 10 minutes of the second half gone and the Tigers leading by 43 to 7, the Tigers decided to even up the match and a few players switched sides and a more balanced match continued and Brentwood came back and scored with switched player George "Brentwood" Agathocleous. The final score was Tigers 43 Brentwood 12, and then all four teams went off, (as tradition insists), to Bar Street to celebrate!!!! Nigel Jarvis PTRFC are sponsored by M1 Lux, Horizon Group and Mercato del Golfo ____________________________________________________________________________ Paphos Tigers v 2nd Princess Wales Royal regiment Semi Final Joint Services Cup Sat 17th April 2010 Paphos Tigers 5 2PWRR 19 Probably the best two teams on the island met up again and what a shame this isn't the Cup Final. So on a hot and breezy day this match starts and the Tigers are quickly into their stride with the ball going through many handling phases and it's 8 minutes before a penalty is awarded to the Tigers which is unfortunately narrowly missed. 2 PWRR use the sun and wind at their backs very cleverly by hoisting many balls up into the blinding sun and rushing the Tigers defense trying to force mistakes. Both sides miss penalty attempts but the first score does not come until 25 minutes into what is becoming a battle royal, with first blood going to 2PWRR with another high ball bouncing awkwardly over the Tigers heads and into the arms of their winger who scores in the corner and its easily converted by their No15 to take them into a 7 – 0 lead. Two young Tigers, Sotiris Ioannou and Danny Humphries both only 18 are playing really well, working hard and tackling brilliantly, but another long kick into the Tigers corner results in a line out well won by 2PWRR and the score they got came from a well executed pushover try. This is also converted so now they are 14 – 0 in front. Another penalty by the Tigers is missed, and from a scrum on the half way line a good blindside break is made by the visitors and backed up by two more players who run in their third try, missing the conversion taking them up to a 19 point lead before half time. However the Tigers are not dead yet and take a quick tap penalty which results in George Agathocleous crashing over for a try, the conversion missed, making the half time score 2PWRR 19 Tigers 5. Although this is the final score it certainly wasn't the end of the game for both sides had players sin binned in the second half, and eventually 2PWRR had a red card as well in the dying minutes, but to many injuries are being absorbed by the Tigers, four of them carried off from this very hard and bruising encounter, and the Tigers had to resort to putting players who were still coming back from injury and not totally fit as replacements In their effort to get back into the game the Tigers threw everything into the match and frustratingly last passes were either dropped or poorly passed or knocked on in their eagerness to score, and even more penalties missed, but catch up rugby is very hard to do against a very fit, well drilled mostly Fijian side, and the so the final whistle is blown and 2PWRR are through to the Final.
